Helping to Make Dreams into Realities

This year, almost four thousand eighth and ninth graders participated in the College Is For You program, a three-day outreach program that asks students to dream of the future. Under the Office of the Vice President for Education Partnerships, the program works with schools to acquaint students and their parents with the requirements for college admission, the importance of high school graduation, and need to pass state testing.

National studies from The College Board and ACT, Inc. indicate that the earlier students begin thinking of going to college, the more likely they will be to attend. Because of this, ASU offers the College Is For You program to elementary and middle schools statewide.

Presenters are Valley retired teachers and business people who stress the need for high school graduation. Students receive a booklet filled with information for them and their parents including a high school four-year plan and a personal inventory for students to see what learning styles they possess. The booklet also includes the requirements for college admission and the AIMS Honors Tuition Waiver, and ways to finance their education. Many schools follow the College Is For You presentation with field trips to an ASU campus for students to see firsthand what the college experience is like.

Schools interested in scheduling presentations for the 2008-2009 school year can contact the College Is For You staff at (602) 496-1388 or email at options@asu.edu.
