These how-tos provide step-by-step instructions for the features of the interactive mapping tool. References to tools and other features appear in bold. Browse this list for an overview of the map's capabilities.

Zoom in
Option A
- Select the Zoom-In tool.
- Click on the map image.
Option B
- Select the Zoom-In tool.
- Draw a rectangle around the desired area.

Zoom out
Option A
- Select the Zoom-Out tool.
- Click on the map image.
Option B
- Click the Default View tool. The map will return to the image that appeared when the map was first opened—zoomed out to view Maricopa County. Layer selections are retained.

Return to the original map image
- Click the Default View tool. The map will return to the image that appeared when the map was first opened—zoomed out to view Maricopa County. Layer selections are retained.
Move the map image
- Select the Pan tool.
- Click on the map image, then while holding down the mouse, drag the map image in the desired direction. The map will be redrawn with the new area displayed.

Print the map
- Navigate to the desired view.
- Select the Print tool. A Print Map workspace will be displayed at the bottom of the web page.
- Type a title for the map in the Title to Display on Map box.
- Hold down the CTRL key and click the Create Print Page button. A copy of the map will open in a new window.
- To print the map, simply use your browser’s print command (File > Print).

See all community outreach programs on the map
(The map opens to this view)
- In the Layers menu, select All Programs as the visible and active layer.
- To make the layer visible, select the box to the left of the layer name. A check mark will be displayed in the box denoting a visible layer.
- To make the layer active, select the circle to the left of the layer name. The circle will be filled in denoting the active layer.
See locations with multiple programs
- In the Layers menu, select All Programs as the visible and active layer.
- To make the layer visible, select the box to the left of the layer name. A check mark will be displayed in the box denoting a visible layer.
- To make the layer active, select the circle to the left of the layer name. The circle will be filled in denoting the active layer.
- Select Locations with Multiple Programs as a visible layer by clicking the box to the left of the layer name. A black circle will be displayed around all locations with multiple programs.
See school districts, legislative districts, congressional districts, or census data on the map
- In the Layers menu, make the desired layer visible by clicking in the box to the left of the layer name. When selected, a check mark will be placed in the box.
- Uncheck any other layers you no longer want to see.
- To get information about the selected layer (census data for a tract, etc.), see the instructions titled “See data associated with census, political, and school district layers” in the “Using Layers” section.


See program names (labels) next to the program dots
- Make the
All Programs layer visible and active. To make a layer visible, select the box next to the layer name. To make a layer active, select the circle next to the layer name.
- Select the Zoom In tool.
- Click on the map three times. After the third zoom the program labels will appear. Click once more to see the street labels.
- Use the Pan tool to drag the map image around to see more parts of the map.

Find out the name of a program (without zooming in to see program labels)
- Make the
All Programs layer visible and active. To make a layer visible, select the box next to the layer name. To make a layer active, select the circle next to the layer name.
- Select the Identify tool.
- Click on a program dot. The following information is displayed in a table at the bottom of the web page: program title, location, address, and a link to the program’s description on the ASU in the Community website. If multiple programs are listed, there are multiple programs at the location.

Access the program’s description and other information collected
Option A
- Make the
All Programs layer visible and active. To make a layer visible, select the box next to the layer name. To make a layer active, select the circle next to the layer name.
- Turn off pop-up blockers or hold down the CTRL key while completing step 3 to temporarily disable pop-up blockers (to turn off pop-up blockers, from the Internet Explorer menu, select Tools, then Internet Options, select the Privacy tab, uncheck the Block pop-ups box, click OK).
- Select the Hyperlink tool from the tool bar.
- Click on a program dot. The program’s description, mission, and other details as entered by the program coordinator will be displayed in a new ASU in the Community window. If a URL to the program’s website was provided, it will be displayed in this window. If the description is not displayed it is because the pop-up window has been blocked by your internet browser. See step 2.
Option B
- Check that the
All Programs layer is visible and active. To make a layer visible, select the box next to the layer name. To make a layer active, select the circle next to the layer name.
- Select the Identify tool.
- Select a program dot. A URL to the the program’s description on the ASU in the community website is displayed in the table at the bottom of the web page.
- Select the URL. The program’s description, mission, and other details as entered by the program coordinator will be displayed in a new ASU in the Community window. If a URL to the program’s website was provided, it will be displayed in this window. If the description is not displayed it is because the pop-up window has been blocked by your internet browser. See step 2.

Search for a program (by program name, zip code, city, street, etc)
The Find tool searches the database based on the active layer selected.
- Make the layer you want to search visible and active. To make a layer visible, select the box next to the layer name. To make a layer active, select the circle next to the layer name. For example, if you want to search for programs, select
All Programs as the visible and active layer. If you want to search for an elementary school district, select Elementary School Dist as the active and visible layer
- Select the Find tool. A search box will be displayed at the bottom of the web page.
- Enter keyword(s). For example, if you want to find
all programs on McDowell Road, type McDowell
- Select Find String. A list of programs matching the specified criteria will be displayed.
- To print the results, see “Print a list of search results” below.
- To zoom to the area of the program location, select the record by clicking on the Rec number in the first column of the table.The map will zoom-in the program location. If multiple programs are found, clicking the Rec number will turn the identified program dots yellow and zoom you into that area of the map.
- To clear the results, select the ClearSelect tool
Print a list of search results
- Use the Find or Select tool to generate a list of programs at the bottom of the screen (search results).
- Scroll down to the bottom of the list of search results.
- Select the Export Table to Excel button. A new window will open.
- Right click on the text “Please RIGHT CLICK HERE…”
- Select Save Target As from the pop up menu.
- Save the file where desired (rename as desired). The file will be saved as an Excel spreadsheet.
- To print the file, locate the Excel file you just created. Open the file. Select File, then Print.

Map programs by individual program impact areas
- Make the desired impact area the visible layer by clicking the box (visible layer) and circle (active layer) next to the layer name.
- Uncheck
All Programs as a visible layer. Only program dots for the desired impact area will be visible.


Layers are geographic data sets that control what is visible on the map. Layers can be turned on and off. The community outreach programs (organized by impact areas) are the basic layer. Other layers can be added on top of the program locations.
For example, you may want to see program locations and then layer the elementary school district boundaries over the program locations in order to see which programs are in which elementary school districts.
All Programs is the visible and active layer when the map is first opened. This layer shows all of the ASU community outreach programs displayed on the ASU in the Community web site that have program location information.

Make a layer visible
Visible layers can be seen on the map. Multiple layers can be visible.
- Select the box next to the layer name. A check mark will be displayed in the box to indicate that the layer is selected as the visible layer.
- Uncheck any previously visible layers that you no longer need.
Make a layer active
The active layer is the layer the tools apply to and that you can get information about. Only one layer at a time can be active.
- Select the circle next to the layer name. The circle will be darkened to indicate that the layer is active.
- The previously active layer will be automatically deselected.
Map individual program impact areas
For example, map only Environment programs.
- Make the desired impact area the visible layer by clicking the box (visible layer) and circle (active layer) next to the layer name.
- Uncheck
All Programs as a visible layer. Only program dots for the desired impact area will be visible.

See school districts, legislative districts, congressional districts, or census data on the map (add a geographic data layer/make a layer visible)
- In the Layers menu, make the desired layer visible by clicking in the box to the left of the layer name. When selected, a check mark will be placed in the box.
- Uncheck any other layers you no longer want to see.
- To get information about the selected layer (census data for a tract, etc.), see the instructions titled “See data associated with census, political, and school district layers” in this section.

See which programs are in a specific school district
(if you know where the district is)
- In the Layers menu, select
All Programs as a visible and active layer (when you first open the map this layer is already visible and active).
- To make the layer visible, select the box to the left of the layer name. A check mark will be displayed in the box denoting a visible layer.
- To make the layer active, select the circle to the left of the layer name. The circle will be filled in denoting the active layer.
- Make the desired school district layer a visible layer by clicking the box next to the layer name, placing a check mark in the box. For example, make Unified School Districts by selecting the box to the left of the layer name.
- Use the Zoom In or Pan tool to locate the district. Then Zoom In until the program names are displayed.

See which programs are in a specific school district
(if you don’t know where the district is)
- In the Layers menu, select
All Programs as a layer (when you first open the map this layer is already visible and active).
To make the layer visible, select the box to the left of the layer name. A check mark will be displayed in the box denoting a visible layer.
- Make the desired school district layer a visible and active layer by clicking the box next to the layer name, placing a check mark in the box and then selecting the circle next to the layer name. For example, Unified School Districts.
- Select the Find tool and type the name of the school district in the Find box at the bottom of the web page. For example, Mesa Unified.
- In the first column of the table, select the Rec number of the desired district. The district will be highlighted in orange.
- Select All Programs as the active layer.
- Select the Zoom-In tool, then click on the map image until the program labels are visible (3 clicks from the default view).

See which programs are in a specific legislative, congressional, or Phoenix City Council district
- In the Layers menu, select
All Programs as a visible and active layer (when you first open the map this layer is already visible and active).
- To make the layer visible, select the box to the left of the layer name. A check mark will be displayed in the box denoting a visible layer.
- To make the layer active, select the circle to the left of the layer name. The circle will be filled in denoting the active layer.
- Make the desired district layer (legislative district/congressional district/city council district) a visible layer by clicking the box next to the layer name, placing a check mark in the box.
- Select the Zoom-In tool, then click on the map image until the program labels are visible (3 clicks from the default view).

See program locations with census data
- In the Layers menu, select
All Programs as a visible layer by selecting the box to the left of the layer name. A check mark will be displayed in the box denoting a visible layer.
- Select the desired census layer as a visible layer.
- To see census data for each census tract:
- Make the visible census data layer the active layer by selecting the circle next to the layer name.
- Select the Identify tool.
- Click in the desired census tract. Data associated with the tract is displayed in the table below the map image. Scroll to the right to see all data.

See data associated with census, political, and school district layers
- In the Layers menu, select the desired layer as a visible and active layer.
- To make the layer visible, select the box to the left of the layer name. A check mark will be displayed in the box denoting a visible layer.
- To make the layer active, select the circle to the left of the layer name. The circle will be filled in denoting the active layer.
- Select the Identify tool.
- Click in the desired district. Data associated with the district or tract is displayed in the table below the map image. Scroll to the right to see all data.

See district map boundaries and census layers without program locations
- In the Layers menu, make the desired layer visible by clicking in the box to the left of the layer name. When selected, a check mark will be placed in the box.
- Deselect any other visible layers (usually
All Programs ).
