What is ASU in the Community?
ASU in the Community is an online resource of Arizona State University’s community outreach programs and activities—a tool to demonstrate social embeddedness.

This web site compiles basic information about hundreds of programs and activities that benefit the community, from campus-wide community service projects to legal clinics, health services, tutoring and mentoring, summer camps, and college readiness programs. Users can search for programs, obtain program information, and map community outreach program locations.

The information on this web site is dynamic, changing as programs are added and modified by faculty and staff who coordinate community outreach programs. The web site relies on ASU faculty and staff to add and maintain their community outreach program information.

Download a short Power Point presentation about ASU in the Community or listen to a podcast featuring an interview with Amanda Burke, Assistant Director of the Office of University Iniatives, for more information on ASU in the Community.

Why was ASU in the Community created?
ASU in the Community has been developed as a way to demonstrate the breadth and depth of ASU’s community outreach efforts. ASU in the Community was initially developed to provide a list of ASU’s community outreach activities. Recognizing that there is a greater need for more detailed information about community outreach programs, this web site represents the first phase of ASU in the Community .

Who should use this web site?
The web site was primarily designed as a resource for ASU faculty, staff, and administrators, however anyone can use the site to learn about ASU’s community outreach activities.

How can I use this web site?
You can use the site to:

  • Search ASU’s community outreach programs by interest area, keyword, city, participants, campus, zip code, college or any combination of these criteria in a database of over 300 programs in over 400 locations.
  • Map ASU’s community outreach programs using an interactive mapping tool over a dynamic backdrop of census data, school districts, legislative districts, congressional districts, city council districts or zip codes.
  • Connect with ASU’s community outreach programs, collaborate with others who engage with the community, and see where ASU is in the region.

What is community outreach?
For the purpose of ASU in the Community, outreach is the extension of the university’s resources in the form of knowledge and service to help communities improve quality of life. The distinguishing characteristic of community outreach programs on this website is that a direct benefit is provided to the community.

Which community outreach programs are included on the web site?
The goal is to include all of ASU’s community outreach programs and activities—any engagement efforts that benefit the community. Program information on the web site is provided by faculty and staff who coordinate community outreach programs. If you coordinate a program that isn’t listed, please add your program.

Do you know about a program that isn't listed? Please send this web site to the program or e-mail us at asucommunity@asu.edu. We will follow-up to get the program listed on the web site.

Which community outreach programs should be included on the web site?
The following guidelines will help determine if an ASU program should be included on the web site:

  • Is the program or activity supported by ASU?
  • Is there a direct benefit to the community?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then the program should be included on the web site. This will ensure that ASU faculty, staff, students and community members can learn about the program, activity or resource. Adding your program is easy and instructions are at www.asu.edu/community/addprogram. Programs can be open to the public or intended for a specific audience, can be of any size or scope, and can be located anywhere in Arizona.

There are a variety of types of programs on the web site including:

  • Recurring events such as community service events, lecture series, fairs, performances, etc.
  • Informational resources such as curriculum guides, digital gateways, campus tours, etc.
  • Legal, health, and consulting services
  • Service learning internships and other community-based internships
  • Public service research and research centers
  • Community-based support groups or book clubs
  • Facilities that are open to the public such as museums, planetariums, health centers, etc.
  • Professional development opportunities for community members
  • Classes and summer camps for kids and adults
  • Community service student organizations
  • Degree or certificate programs that are developed in conjunction with a community-based organization to meet a particular community need

Do you know about a program that isn't listed? Please send this web site to the program or e-mail asucommunity@asu.edu. We will follow-up to get the program listed on the web site.

Why aren’t all ASU programs in the community listed?

We rely on faculty and staff who coordinate community outreach programs and activities to add and update their programs.  While we have attempted to include as many programs as possible, the program information is dynamic, changing as faculty and staff add and modify programs.

We make every effort to ensure as many programs as possible are included.   We have contacted the deans and provosts of all colleges, schools and administrative units in order to get the message to individual faculty and staff involved in community outreach. We also reach out to individual programs as we learn about them.

If you know about a community outreach program that isn’t listed, please email us and we will contact the program to get them listed. If you coordinate a program that isn’t listed, please add your program.

How frequently is the web site updated?
The ASU in the Community web site is updated dynamically as programs are added, inactivated, and modified. When a program is added or modified, a database trustee reviews the program entry for completeness. After the review is complete (usually within 24 hours) the program is available on the web site.

What information is collected for this web site?
See a list of program information collected.

Adding and Updating Programs

How is information for this web site collected?
Community outreach program information is entered into the database by faculty and staff. A series of online forms collects the data that is displayed on the web site.

What information is collected?
See a list of program information collected.

How can I add a program?
See quick instructions for adding a new program or see a step-by-step guide to adding and maintaining programs..

Why isn’t my program included?
The most likely reason your program isn’t included is because it has not been submitted. To add your program to the database and the ASU in the Community web site and map, log in to the database. If you have added your program don't see it on the web site, please contact asucommunity@asu.edu

The details of my program have changed. How do I update the information?

See "How to modify a program."

My program is no longer active. How do I delete it?
See "How to inactivate a program."

The program information I submitted has been edited. Why?

ASU in the Community reserves the right to edit submissions. We primarily edit for clarity to ensure that the entry clearly describes the program's activities and impacts.

What happened to the mission field in my program description?

The new ASU in the Community program submission process no longer requires information for a program’s mission statement. We have gone through the outreach programs in the database and merged the “program description” and “mission statement” fields into a single field. If you would like to edit your program’s description, please go to http://community.uui.asu.edu/add.asp.

Mapping Tool

What is the mapping tool?
The interactive mapping tool utilizes geographic information systems (GIS) to map the locations of ASU’s community outreach programs. Program locations can be viewed within school districts, legislative districts, congressional districts, Phoenix City Council districts, and census data.

Which programs are displayed on the map?
Programs that provide a complete address, including location name and exact street address are included on the map. At this time we are only able to display programs in Maricopa County.

Why isn’t my program on the map?
Your program may not be included on the map because you entered “various locations” for the program location or provided an incomplete address.

How often is the map updated?
The map is updated every weekday (except Wednesday) at 5:00 p.m.

How do I use the map?

See "Basic tips for using the map." Step-by-step "how to" instructions are also available.

Is there an easier way to use the mapping tool?

Yes! Users can access frequently requested maps in .pdf format rather than using the interactive mapping tool. These maps are snapshots of the map on specific dates. The maps show program locations compared to a variety of geographic boundary data, such as census data, zip codes, cities, school districts, and political districts.
